A Pair of candlesticks belonging to the 11th Duke of Hamilton were two of the more valuable items brought to Ferne Animal Sanctuary’s antiques valuation day.

The event at the centre near Chard saw four valuation experts from Lawrences Auctioneers of Crewkerne analyse potential antiques brought in by members of the public.

Nicola Davidson of Ferne said: “Miranda Bingham, Alex Butcher and Jeff Day were rushed off their feet with jewellery, silver and militaria items brought in by the public, but Simon Jones on the general items table was nearly overwhelmed by the fantastic response and interest from local people with a wide array of antique items.

“While some were a little disappointed to find their items were of little value, one visitor to the event had some spectacular news.

“A pair of candlesticks, found on an Australian website, were brought to the event and confirmed as having belonged to the 11th Duke of Hamilton, an ancestor of the family of Nina, Duchess of Hamilton and Brandon, the founder of Ferne Animal Sanctuary.”

The event also included a raffle, stalls and bric-a-brac. A total of Pounds 738 was raised for the sanctuary.

Mrs Davidson added: “We would like to say a big thank you to Lawrences of Crewkerne for donating their time and energy to all the valuations.

“We would also like to thank everyone who supported the day, through donations and hard work.”
