Planting a future for lawn tennis

WITH the official opening of the new Torquay clubhouse and court facilities by the President of the Lawn Tennis Association this month, I thought you might be interested in the enclosed memorabilia.
The small but flourishing Cockington Tennis Club was invited by the council to take over the running of Torquay Lawn Tennis Club in the mid-1950s, and you see their membership in 1950.
Well-known members included Rev Bridger, a partner at Kenny, Smith & Co Solicitors; Raymond Kohanick, a dentist; the Dickensons, chemists at Torre; Sonia Goodwin, a violinist with the other employees of Torquay Council; Joan Collard, whose father was the famous potter from Honiton; and no doubt readers will remember many more.
I was June Lang before my marriage in 1952 (right, front row), and after 60 years I organised a very successful reunion which included the young man at the end of second row right. Including Joan Collard, three of us had not met up through all that time!
I returned to Torquay in 1974 and joined the Club in 1975 when the subscription was Pounds 7, which included the issue of a box of six tennis balls at the start of the season and a further box mid- season (see membership card). The junior section prize-giving in about 1989 will be of great interest as will the presentation to Lawrence Webster and Rob Short by the then Chairman, Elaine Hall- Roberts.
The fulfilment of many years of effort has at last been achieved by the very hard work of Steve Maslin, our manager/coach and a very dedicated chairman and committee.
